Upon the invitation to take part in the exhibition Phantom of Limbs of Steel, the collective Beyond the Post-Soviet (Btps) presents an audio archive Bench, commissioned by the Palais de Tokyo, and connected to the exhibition Borders Are Nocturnal Animals in 2024.

Btps draws on various forms of knowledge, including memory, emotion, and imagination. Approaching post-socialist regions through a decolonial lens, the collective examines the intersections between different forms of colonialism. Reflecting on how distance and borders shape individual and collective experiences, Btps envisions a space in which diverse voices can contemplate proximityand transcend separation.

To this end, the collective invited cultural workers, thinkers, and writers from different geographic and social backgrounds to respond to the question: “How can we be next to each other?” Participants were free to express themselves in any language or sonic form of their choosing. The result is a sound archive and installation that weaves together voices, sounds, and songs into a shared acousticlandscape.

The collective invites audiences to sit, listen to the voices, sounds, and poetry, and inhabit a space of collective presence.
