Die Gruppenausstellung When the Sick Rule the World vereint die Praktiken von vierzehn Künstler*innen und zwei Kollektiven, die die vorherrschenden Konzepte von Gesundheit, Produktivität und Fähigkeit (eng. ability) destabilisieren. Die Ausstellung entlehnt ihren Titel einem Essay aus der gleichnamigen Prosasammlung der Autorin Dodie Bellamy aus dem Jahr 2015. Der Text zelebriert all diejenigen als Hoffnungsträger*innen, die innerhalb eines ruinösen Systems der Effizienz als krank, schwach, unproduktiv und damit auch als weniger wert eingestuft werden.
Die dehnbare soziale Konstruktion von „Krankheit“ war ausschlaggebend für die Entwicklung der Moderne und trug vor allem zu dem Verhältnis zwischen Produktion, Reproduktion und der gewaltsamen Verweigerung der körperlichen Autonomie bei. Heute ist „Krankheit“ weiterhin eine zentrale Kategorie für systemische Unterdrückung, auch jenseits der medizinischen Normierung. Sie kann durch weitere Zuschreibungen anderer wirkmächtiger Kategorien wie Klasse, Geschlecht oder Rasse verstärkt zur Geltung kommen wie auch durch die jeweiligen spezifischen Bedingungen und Sichtbarkeiten von mentaler oder funktionaler Diversität.
Unsere Ökonomien produzieren fragile Umgebungen, unter Schmerzen und Depressionen leidende menschliche und nichtmenschliche Körper sowie eine ständig wachsende Zahl von Patient*innen, die in einem konstanten Wartezustand verharren müssen. Die Autorin und Dichterin Anne Boyer macht in ihrem Buch The Undying deutlich, dass „kein Patient souverän ist“, und attestiert: „die Geschichte von Krankheit ist nicht die Geschichte der Medizin – es ist die Geschichte der Welt – und die Geschichte, einen Körper zu haben könnte durchaus die Geschichte dessen sein, was den meisten von uns im Interesse einiger weniger angetan wird.“
Inspiriert von Dodie Bellamys prophezeiender Umkehrung eines Systems, das Krankheit konstruiert und kapitalisiert, imaginiert die Ausstellung When the Sick Rule the World eine Welt, die von der Perspektive all derjenigen geprägt ist, die als schwach, abnorm und nicht konform behandelt werden. Die eingeladenen Künstler*innen verhandeln und erproben emanzipatorische Infrastrukturen, Diskurse und Ästhetiken jenseits vorherrschender Repräsentationspolitiken: Allianzen in und durch Krankheit und Pflegearbeit, das subversive Potenzial von Nicht-Transparenz und Undurchsichtigkeit, Strategien, die die Zeitwahrnehmung aus der Sicht von Gesundheit und Effizienz herausfordern sowie neue Formen des Zusammenlebens, in denen schließlich nicht mehr regiert werden muss.
Die Gruppenausstellung präsentiert lokale und internationale künstlerische Positionen, die ein dichtes Netzwerk an Bezügen aufbauen und die zentrale Bedeutung von Bündnissen und Solidarität jenseits von Zeit, Raum und Verwundbarkeiten betonen. Die Ausstellung umfasst neben den Medien Malerei, Skulptur, Grafik, Fotografie und Video auch die Präsentation von Zeitschriften und künstlerischen Publikationen.

The group exhibition When the Sick Rule the World brings together the practices of fourteen artists and two collectives that destabilize the dominant conceptions of health, productivity, and ability. The exhibition borrows its title from the author and novelist Dodie Bellamy’s eponymous essay in which those considered sick, weak, or inefficient and therefore ‘less valuable’ are alternatively celebrated as bearers of hope within a system that is itself inherently broken.
The malleable social construction of ‘sickness’ has been decisive for the development of Modernity in its contribution to the relations between production and reproduction and the violent denial of bodily autonomy and agency to specific subjects in society and/or entire groups. Today, ‘sickness’ continues to serve as a violent category to justify systemic oppression beyond medical wisdom, instead unfairly motivated by class, gender, racial discrimination, and the specifics of individual mental or functional diversities.
Our economies produce fragile environments in which human and non-human bodies suffer in pain and/or depression, indefinitely waiting to receive treatment and auspicious results or mentally prepare themselves for the worst. In ‘The Undying’, author and poet Anne Boyer makes manifest that “no patient is sovereign” by attesting that “the history of illness is not the history of medicine – it is the history of the world – and the history of having a body could well be the history of what is done to most of us in the interest of a few.”
Following Dodie Bellamy’s prophesy which anticipates an inversion of the regime that capitalizes on sickness, the exhibition When the Sick Rule the World rethinks the resistance to power from the perspective of those treated as weak, deviant, and, consequently, non-compliant. The invited artists explore critical (self-)care work and alliances in and through sickness, potentials of opacity for generating one’s own infrastructures and a visual language beyond representational politics, strategies that unsettle the chrono-normative principles, and, ultimately, forms of living together beyond ruling or being ruled.
The group exhibition presents local and international artistic positions that build a dense network of references, emphasizing the importance of alliances and solidarity beyond time, space and vulnerabilities. In addition to the media of painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography and video, the exhibition also includes the presentation of magazines and publications.
