The Groovy African Ladies Music School’s 2018 collaborative project with students of ROCK It Musikstudio in Mainburg, Germany.
It is time to announce our next project: Recording Rockstar! Since our first session, the first thing that all the students learned on the guitar was a simple groove that we played and played. When our top student, Mary Shinybright, added her lyrics, a song was born. Over time, we arranged the song for the group, adding a guitar hook, funky bass line, drums and a rap part. Rockstar became our theme song.
It was performed many times since then. It was part of the set for the WAW Jaliyah Groovy Project and presented to audiences in Senegal at the Boukout Festival, Bignona, Douloulou Festival, Jaliyah Festival, Abene.
Now we want to record the song as a collaborative project with our Groovy Ladies music students here in Germany and their Gambian counterparts. Two studios, Two Workshops, Two countries, One song, One music video, One group of Groovy Ladies!
For her entire life Miriama has been on path of the musician/traveler. Her quest for music has brought her to five continents. Born and raised in the USA, she hit the road at 16 years and never looked back. The roots of her sound evolved from her worldwide travels. She studied with the world famous Karnatic music family Narayanan in India (Madras Music Academy) and in West Afrika (Gambia) with the Griot-Family Jobarteh. In every land she visited, the quest was to meet, collaborate and learn from local musicians and songwriters.
Over the years, Mama Miriama has appeared at Festivals, Theatres, Clubs and events in USA, Mexico, Italy, Gambia, Senegal, France, Spain, Finland, India, UK, and Germany sharing stage and bill with musicians such as Manu Dibango, Jimmy Cliff, Michael Franti, Sousou and Maher Cissoko, Joan Armatrading, John Mayall, Phish, Laura Love Band, Soig Sibiril, Guru Guru and many other great artists.
In 2005 she relocated to Europe, working as sidewoman guitarist and singer with the inspirational Aruban singer/ songwriter, Wally Warning, the multi cultural world music outfit Jobarteh Kunda and other projects in varied genres; reggae, jazz, blues, and folk. She has appeared onstage in Germany, Austria, Italy and Senegal at international festivals including Reggae Chiemsee Festival, Woodstock Dornstadt ,Afrika Tage Vienna, Sunsplash Austria, Tollwood München, the legendary Finkenbach Festival, Bardentreffen Festival Nürmberg, Zugluft Festival Tirol, Boukotte Festival in Bignona, Senegal. Miriama’s original musical concept developed from all the different cultural influences mixed with her American-born love of rocknroll, jazz and blues.
Equally at home on small intimate stages and larger city and festival stages, Mama Miriama Band’s music has no cultural or musical boundaries.
With her unique outlook on life, original style on guitar and violin and her warm voice, Miriamas own compositions and songs touch the heart.
